Tips for your family portrait session:
Get plenty of rest the night before. Happy children = beautiful portraits. Before arriving at your session, make sure that everyone has a full tummy. Bring along any small, meaningful items you'd like to incorporate into your session. Try to arrive on time or a few minutes early. Try to have fun! Relaxed families = beautiful portraits!
What to Wear
Begin with the most difficult person to dress first and plan all other outfits around that person, remembering to coordinate colors and patterns as if you were pulling one outfit together. Consider the colors in your home when you're planning your outfits, as your portraits will hang in your home and you want them to reflect the personality and style of your family. Make sure you are comfortable in your clothing- if you are not, it will sow in the picture.
- wear solid colored clothing
- choose muted tones that are a bit subdued
- choose similar tones for your top and bottom (both dark or both light)
- choose 1-3 colors for your group portrait, ones with similar tones that go nicely together and have everyone work within that color palette. (For example: dark green, navy, and burgundy – all dark jewel tones. OR tan, a lighter olive green, and denims – all lighter, softer tones.)
- choose a top with sleeves at least to the elbow
- choose long pants for men/ladies or a skirt below the knee for ladies
- choose dark socks and footwear (unless it’s a barefoot photo on the beach)
- keep jewelry simple and minimalistic
- do your hair the way you’d normally do it while wearing these clothes
- if getting a haircut or new hairdo, make your appointment at least 2 weeks prior to your portrait session
- powder, mascara and blush
What Not to Wear
- jeans and white shirts
- CrAzY patterns
- thin stripes (they photograph funny)
- matching outfits
- nothing too trendy (but scarves and hats are cool)
